Casablanca Airport Set for $1.6 Billion Upgrade Ahead of 2030 World Cup

Casablanca’s Mohammed V Airport is on the verge of a major expansion, with the construction of a cutting-edge terminal designed to function as a key international hub. Led by the National Airports Authority (ONDA), this ambitious project represents an investment of 15 billion dirhams and is expected to be completed by 2029. With a capacity to handle 20 million passengers annually, the new terminal marks a significant step in Morocco’s goal of establishing itself as a strategic aviation hub.

Shaped like an “H,” the terminal will be built to meet the highest international airport standards. It will feature an advanced baggage handling system, reduced connection times, and jet bridges designed for high traffic efficiency. The project is particularly aimed at supporting the expansion of Royal Air Maroc’s operations while significantly enhancing the passenger experience with state-of-the-art facilities.

A key highlight of the new terminal is its direct connection to the upcoming high-speed rail (LGV) line linking Kenitra and Marrakech. This railway integration will provide travelers with faster access to major cities, reducing travel times and strengthening Morocco’s intermodal transportation network. Drawing inspiration from world-class airports such as Paris Charles de Gaulle and London Heathrow, the project aims to streamline passenger flows and reinforce Casablanca’s position as a major transit hub.

The terminal’s architectural design takes inspiration from the Atlantic Ocean, with flowing lines that mimic the movement of waves, blending modernity with Moroccan identity. This concept reflects Morocco’s role as a gateway between Africa and the world, while also offering travelers a unique visual experience.

Inside, the terminal will showcase Moroccan craftsmanship, incorporating Andalusian-inspired geometric patterns, Berber carpets, and traditional archways to immerse visitors in the country’s rich cultural heritage from the moment they arrive.

Beyond its functional purpose, the terminal will include two large green spaces—lush indoor gardens with palm trees and landscaped areas, designed to create a tranquil environment for travelers. These natural retreats will harmoniously blend modernity with a touch of nature, providing a refreshing pause within the airport’s bustling atmosphere.

The architectural approach will also highlight materials rooted in Moroccan tradition, such as earth-toned coatings reminiscent of terracotta zellige tiles. This fusion of heritage and innovation is intended to offer passengers a warm and immersive experience.

The bidding process for construction will begin in the coming months, with initial groundwork already underway. The terminal’s 2029 launch aligns with ONDA’s “Airports 2030” strategy, which aims to modernize Morocco’s airport infrastructure and address the challenges of growing air traffic.

With this expansion, Casablanca is equipping itself with a strategic asset to accommodate rising passenger numbers and prepare for major global events, including the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
