Rabat unveils amphibious bus tours linking city streets and river views

Rabat is gearing up to launch a one-of-a-kind tourist attraction that promises to reshape how visitors explore the city. Soon, two amphibious buses will hit the streets—and the waters—offering a unique journey that blends urban sightseeing with a river cruise along the Bouregreg. The initiative is being led by Rabat Région Mobilité, the organization responsible for advancing transportation and tourism in the capital.

The total cost of acquiring, operating, and maintaining the vehicles has been pegged at 23 million dirhams. These custom-built buses are engineered to transition seamlessly between land and water, equipped with specialized hulls for marine navigation and safety systems designed to handle the shift between terrain and river.

Onboard, passengers can expect a comfortable and modern experience. Each bus will feature a panoramic roof to maximize views, synchronized multilingual audio guides, and full accessibility for individuals with limited mobility. The interiors will also include ventilation systems, internet connectivity, and ergonomic seating to enhance the ride.

The project will be rolled out in stages. The first phase, expected to last 14 months, focuses on delivering and launching the buses. After that, a three-year operational phase will handle ongoing maintenance and technical support, with the option to extend the service further depending on its success.

This venture is part of a broader strategy to diversify Rabat’s tourism offerings. By merging road travel with river navigation, the amphibious buses will give visitors a fresh perspective on the city’s historic landmarks while highlighting the scenic beauty and ecological richness of the Bouregreg Valley. It’s a bold step aimed at enhancing Rabat’s image as a modern, dynamic destination with experiences that go far beyond the traditional tour.
