More Moroccan companies are paying attention to their social and environmental impact, according to the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), which celebrated 20 years of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Charter. The event was held in Casablanca during the annual CGEM CSR Label Awards ceremony under the theme “20 Years of the CSR Charter: From Commitment to Impact.”

The charter was launched in 2006 to encourage businesses to grow while also supporting society, protecting the environment and following good governance practices.

Speaking at the event, CGEM President Mehdi Tazi said corporate social responsibility is no longer just a voluntary commitment for businesses.

“It has become a driver of competitiveness, resilience and trust for businesses,” he said.

He added that social, environmental and governance issues are now part of how many companies plan their growth and measure their long term success.

The event also included a discussion on how CSR can help companies improve their performance and stay competitive. Businesses that have received the CGEM CSR label shared examples of how these practices have helped them.

The growing importance of these issues can also be seen in Morocco’s regulations. The Moroccan Capital Market Authority (AMMC) now requires listed companies to publish reports on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues.

According to recent surveys in North Africa, more than 60% of business leaders believe that adopting ESG standards helps companies gain access to international funding and improve their credit ratings.

Twenty-one companies were recognised during the ceremony for their commitment to responsible and sustainable growth.

Ten companies received the CGEM CSR Label for the first time, including AXA Services, BOTTU, CGI, Crédit Agricole du Maroc, Frigo Process, Pharma 5, Rabat Région Mobilité, Red Med Private Equity, S2M and Wafa IMA Assistance.

The label was renewed for eleven companies, including AtlantaSanad Assurance, the Casablanca Stock Exchange, Cosumar, HPS, Les Eaux Minérales d’Oulmès, Novec and the National Lottery Management Company.

CGEM said 152 companies have now received its CSR Label, showing what it described as a growing culture of responsibility among Moroccan businesses.

The organisation also highlighted its new “Responsible SME” label, launched in 2025 to help small and medium-sized businesses gradually adopt CSR principles.

The initiative comes as Moroccan companies face new requirements from the European Union, Morocco’s biggest trading partner. New rules linked to carbon emissions and supply chain responsibility are expected to make sustainability and transparency increasingly important for businesses exporting to Europe.
