The Hipica arena in Tétouan witnessed a thrilling showcase of equestrian excellence on Sunday, as Moroccan rider Abdeslam Bennani Smires clinched the coveted Grand Prix of His Majesty King Mohammed VI — the highlight event of the 3* Royal Guard Official Show Jumping Competition, held under the High Patronage of HM the King.
Riding his trusted mount “Hush Hush”, Bennani Smires delivered a flawless performance over two rounds, clocking an impressive time of 44.48 seconds in the decisive jump-off. A narrow victory, but one that crowned his focus, technical mastery, and perfect harmony with his horse.
Close on his heels, Ghali Boukaa, riding “Chester N”, also completed a double clear round, finishing just behind with a time of 44.60 seconds. French rider Florent Jeannin secured third place aboard “Chica De Bourguignon Z” with another clear round in 45.66 seconds.
The prize-giving ceremony was presided over by Moulay Abdellah Alaoui, President of the Royal Moroccan Federation for Equestrian Sports (FRMSE), alongside Major General Abdelaziz Chatar, Commander of the Royal Guard, and the Wali of the Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima region. Civilian and military dignitaries were also present to honor the winners.
“It’s a great day in my career,” said an emotional Bennani Smires in a statement to MAP. “This win is the result of focus and a strong bond with my horse throughout the competition.” He also praised the high level of the event and the ongoing development of equestrian sports in Morocco, driven by the FRMSE’s efforts.
Ghali Boukaa, already in top form, also won the Prize of HRH Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan earlier that same day. Riding “Kiss Me Blue PS”, he completed the course in 63.27 seconds, without a fault. He also took second place with “Goldeneye Des Court” (65.75 seconds), followed by Badr Khiati riding “Numax”, who posted a clear round in 66.55 seconds.
Held over three days under the supervision of the FRMSE, the competition featured 19 events with the participation of 114 riders and 202 horses — a testament to the growing momentum of Moroccan equestrian sport. For one vibrant weekend, Tétouan stood at the heart of the national show jumping scene.
