Japan Tobacco International (JTI) has commenced the construction of its new factory at Tétouan Park within the Tanger Med industrial platform. This significant project, representing an investment of 931.2 million dirhams (approximately 92 million dollars), marks a pivotal step for JTI’s development in Morocco and across Africa.
The 18,000 square meter factory, situated on a 4.7-hectare plot, will incorporate energy-efficient technologies such as LED lighting, automated management of lighting, air conditioning, and heating, as well as a rainwater recovery and recycling system.
Designed to meet the local market’s needs, this facility will also have the capability to increase production capacity to capitalize on export opportunities. Morocco serves as JTI’s hub for North and West Africa.
JTI’s commitment to sustainable development is evident in its goal to meet at least 40% of the factory’s energy needs through solar power, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2030.
This factory aligns with JTI’s global strategy, which includes 8 research and development centers and 36 production units worldwide. The group’s accolades, such as inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index and the A-List of the Carbon Disclosure Project, underscore its dedication to reducing environmental impact.
Local officials have praised this initiative as a historic project that highlights the positive dynamics of the Tétouan region.
