The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) is strengthening its presence in Africa with a new solar electrification project in Chad. On February 24, 2025, in N’Djamena, ONEE signed two strategic agreements with Chad’s National Electricity Company (SNE), marking a major step forward in the country’s energy development.
Supported by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), the project aims to electrify 20 rural communities through the construction of a 3 MWc solar power plant, coupled with a 15/33 kV step-up substation. This infrastructure will provide sustainable and clean electricity, fostering economic and social development in the targeted areas.
The first agreement covers technical assistance for the completion of the solar power plant and associated electrical infrastructure. The second focuses on training SNE’s executives and technicians, ensuring the project’s long-term efficiency and sustainability.
Additionally, a framework agreement was established between ONEE and SNE to provide ongoing technical support. This partnership will enhance the performance of Chad’s electrical grid while facilitating the transfer of expertise to local engineers and technicians.
During the signing ceremony, ONEE’s Director General, Tarik Hamane, and SNE’s Director General, Saleh Ben Haliki, reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the energy sector. The event was attended by Abdellatif Errouja, Morocco’s Ambassador to Chad, and Najib Amine, the IDB’s representative in Chad.
Through this initiative, ONEE confirms its central role in Africa’s electrification efforts and its commitment to supporting the continent’s energy transition. By partnering with African stakeholders, ONEE is helping modernize electrical infrastructure and integrate more renewable energy sources, aligning its efforts with a long-term, sustainable vision for sub-Saharan Africa.
