Panama has said it supports the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire national territory, including the Sahara. The position was announced on Monday in New York after a meeting between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Eduardo Martínez-Acha Vásquez. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
A joint communiqué issued after the meeting said Panama supports “the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire national territory”.
The communiqué also said the Embassy of Panama in Morocco “fully exercises its consular jurisdiction throughout Moroccan territory.”
Panama also welcomed “the momentum driven by Resolution 2797 (2025), based on the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty.”
The country considers the autonomy plan, presented in 2007, “the only serious, credible and realistic basis for achieving a political solution to this regional dispute”, the communiqué said.
Panama has decided to support the autonomy plan for the Sahara because it believes the region should remain “under Moroccan sovereignty”, Martínez-Acha Vásquez told MAP after the meeting.
Relations between Morocco and Panama are now at an “unprecedented level of excellence”, the Panamanian foreign minister said. He linked the current level of relations to the leadership of King Mohammed VI and Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino.
Martínez-Acha Vásquez also praised the role of Morocco in promoting stability at regional and continental levels.
