Sentury Tire ditches Spain for Morocco in major investment shift

Sentury Tire has officially scrapped its plans to build a tire factory in Spain, redirecting its focus—and funding—to Morocco. The Chinese tire manufacturer cited significant administrative hurdles, particularly around securing environmental permits, as the main reason for halting the project in Galicia. The original plan would have seen an investment exceeding 500 million euros and a production capacity of 12 million tires annually. However, after prolonged delays and regulatory red tape, the group decided to walk away from the deal.

The announcement was made during a financial presentation on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, where the company outlined its revised strategic priorities.

Instead of abandoning its expansion goals altogether, Sentury Tire is doubling down on Morocco. The company will inject an additional 360 million euros into its facility in Tangier Automotive City, a plant that began operations in September 2023. With this new capital, the Moroccan site is expected to reach the same annual output the group had originally planned for the now-canceled Spanish factory.

This pivot highlights Morocco’s growing appeal as a manufacturing hub, offering a more business-friendly environment for industrial investors. For Sentury Tire, it’s not just a change in location—it’s a reaffirmation of its commitment to international growth, now anchored in North Africa.
