Stellantis has started making two new Fiat models at its Kenitra factory, adding more work to the plant as the carmaker expands production in Morocco. The Fiat Grizzly and Fiat Fastback are now being produced at the site. Both models use Stellantis’s Smart Car platform, which can support petrol, mild-hybrid and fully electric vehicles.
The Smart Car platform allows Stellantis to build different types of vehicles on the same production system. The company says this gives its factories more flexibility as demand for different types of engines changes.
Production of the platform at Kenitra started on 15 July 2026. The factory uses automated systems, cameras and artificial intelligence to monitor parts of the production process.
The plant can now produce up to 535,000 vehicles and other mobility products a year. This includes capacity for 400,000 passenger cars and 350,000 engines.
Kenitra also produces the Citroën Ami, Opel Rocks-e and Fiat Topolino. The site can make up to 204,000 electric vehicle charging units a year.
Stellantis has invested €1.2bn in the site and its local supplier network. About €702m of that investment is linked to expanding local suppliers.
More than 7,200 people currently work at the plant. The workforce is expected to grow to more than 9,300 by the end of 2026.
Local suppliers currently account for 69% of the site’s production content. The target is to raise this to 75% by 2030.
“This is a historic day for the Kingdom. This complex is now one of the most efficient in the world, and we are proud of what is being achieved in Morocco,” Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour said during the launch.
The Kenitra factory opened in 2019. Its production has expanded steadily since then, with more models and new production systems being added.
The new Fiat models are part of Stellantis’s wider FastLane 2030 plan. The group is using plants close to major markets to keep production costs down and reduce delivery times.
The automotive sector has become a major part of the country’s export economy. Vehicle and automotive parts exports passed $14bn in 2023.
The country is also the biggest vehicle exporter to the European Union from outside the bloc. Its wider target is to reach more than one million vehicles in annual production capacity across all factories by 2030.
